The Woodcut Tools Irons Shear Scraper, designed in collaboration with internationally recognised woodturner Phil Irons, is a specialised finishing tool developed to refine the external surfaces of bowls and hollow forms. Think of it as a cabinet maker's scraper for woodturners.
Rather than removing large amounts of timber, the Irons Shear Scraper is designed to remove fine, wispy shavings that refine the surface, eliminate torn grain and high spots, and create smooth, flowing curves. The result is an exceptionally clean finish directly from the tool, significantly reducing sanding time.
Unlike conventional flat-topped carbide scrapers, which can bruise or tear the timber fibres, the Irons Shear Scraper slices cleanly through the fibres using a shear-cutting action. This produces a more consistent surface and leaves the timber ideally prepared for finishing with oils, dyes, or stains.

Triangular M2 High Speed Steel Cutter
The Irons Shear Scraper features a substantial 40 mm triangular cutter, manufactured from 4 mm thick, triple-tempered M2 High Speed Steel.
Each cutter provides three cutting edges. As one edge becomes dull, simply rotate the cutter to expose a fresh cutting edge, extending cutter life and minimising downtime.
The gently curved cutting profile helps minimise vibration while producing an exceptionally smooth finish.

Sharpening
The cutter is simple to maintain using a Woodcut Credit Card Diamond Hone
or diamond file.
For safe, accurate, and repeatable sharpening, Woodcut Tools recommends the Tru-Grind Stem Sharpener
used with a CBN grinding wheel.
