Refined Cutter Profile
The best ideas rarely come from an office. This cutter profile was inspired by feedback from a highly experienced turner who had cored hundreds, if not thousands, of bowls over a lifetime at the lathe. Working extensively in end grain, he suggested a cutter profile that felt less aggressive, more predictable, and easier to control in demanding cuts.
Rather than rushing the change into production, Woodcut Tools worked with experienced turners around the world to test the design across a wide range of timber species, grain structures, and workshop conditions. The result was clear: a smoother, more controlled cutting experience with improved consistency and finish quality.
The latest Bowlsaver blades now feature this refined tapered profile and negative rake geometry to help improve control throughout the cut.
Why Stellite?
Bowl coring places significant demands on a cutter. Knots, bark inclusions, and other defects can create heavy impacts during the cut, while turners also want a clean finish that minimises sanding.
When researching cutter materials, Woodcut Tools looked beyond woodturning and investigated what was being used successfully in sawmill operations. Stellite was widely recognised for its ability to withstand impact from knots, stones, and other contaminants while maintaining excellent wear resistance.
The result is a cutter that:
- Performs well in both hard and soft timbers
- Produces an excellent finish directly from the cut
- Resists wear for a long operational life
- Can be hollow ground when sharpening is required
Every Bowlsaver blade is supplied with a Stellite cutter.
Why is the Stellite Cutter Welded to the Blade?
Stellite is an extremely hard material. This hardness provides the durability and long life that make it ideal for bowl coring, but it also makes machining screw holes impractical.
For this reason, the cutter is permanently welded to the blade.
Should a cutter ever require replacement, replacement Stellite tips are available and can be fitted by your local saw doctor.
Cutter life.
With normal use, many turners find their Stellite cutters last for many years, and in some cases a lifetime. Cutter life will vary depending on the volume of coring and the timber being used.
Note: These blades are not compatible with the Bowlsaver Max3.
