Woodcut Tool's founder Ken Port wanted to make sharpening more simple, accurate and repeatable. In the late 1990's Ken collaborated with Jerry Glaser from the USA to design the Woodcut Tru-Grind. Ken and Jerry recognised that many turners have various physical constraints and therefore wanted to make the sharpening process simple.
In 2020, with customer feedback Woodcut Tools began a process to improve the Base Slide and Sturdy Rest to make the sharpening process more simple, accurate and repeatable. After almost three years of testing various new Base Slide and Sturdy Rest design prototypes with turners across the world to ensure the new products were right, the new Woodcut Tru-Grind Base Slide and Sturdy Rest was available for customers in mid 2023.
The new Sturdy Rest features a wide platform to ensure stability while sharpening, especially scrapers. In addition there are now reference marks on the platform and arm to assist turners to simply repeat the sharpening set up.
The Sturdy rest arm is securely supported in position for safe sharpening. When not in use, or when using the Tru-Grind Toolholder, the Sturdy Rest swings down out of the way to allow easy access to the grinding wheel.
The assembly inserts into the front of the Tru-Grind Base Slide. Made from thick plate steel to eliminate flexing and powder coated to ensure long life.
